Now is the
Time to
Get What You REALLY Want From Life!
How many of you wake up each morning and ask, “What can I do today to ruin the rest of my life?” Of course not! No one does. Yet when you look at the behavior of a lot of people, don’t you wonder what these people are thinking? Their actions are so out of line with the results they are really trying to achieve.
Let me illustrate what I mean. Take a moment and begin to analyze the behavior of the people you have known in business. Think of the ones who were difficult to work with—the ones who complained about everything. Then there were those who had other interests other than work. Work seems to be an interference with what they really should be doing with their time. And then there are those prima donnas who think the world owes them a living, and a great living at that? And of course, we have the know-it-all professor-types who know everything but do very little. It seems that actual work is beneath their great abilities. Now, don’t you begin to wonder what they tell themselves each morning, before they show up at work?
On the other hand, think of someone who has or had a positive attitude, was self-motivated, understood not on the job at hand but how it related to the other people in the organization. What if this person was an innovative thinker, able to find unique solutions to problems that raised productivity? Additionally, suppose this person was calm and insightful, and showed up every day, ready to work. What would this person be worth in any organization or any group?
These are the lessons we should have learned in life. These are the qualities that separate the high achievers from the also-rans. These are the people who will be the self-leaders and the leaders of tomorrow.
Of course, when you grow up in Hawaii, you live a jaded life. You think that every day is fun and games, surfing and deep sea fishing, and that the world should be calm and relaxed as you are. You believe that the sun should shine every day and the only purpose for rain is to bring out rainbows. You have great friends and your parents live nearby. You have a few dozen first cousins and most of them live in Honolulu. So you have a powerful family to support you and a network of very close friends.
Change Happens
Unfortunately, nothing remains the same. At the urging of my wife, we decide to move to the “mainland,” the continental United States. Of course, you may be wondering why someone who was born and raised in Hawaii would ever choose to leave a place of everyone else’s dreams. Well, it is a long story. But somehow, we believed that our fame and fortune lay in the United States.
Unlike most people who were born in Hawaii, we did not choose to move to California. Instead, we decided to move to Arizona. Now Arizona is about a different from Hawaii as you can get. I liked to say that when I arrived in Arizona, the green of Hawaii had turned to brown of the desert.
Now a lot of people who knew me in Hawaii knew how much I loved being on the beach. I spent a lot of time in the ocean, swimming, surfing, scuba diving and deep sea fishing. When they ask how I could have left the beaches of Hawaii, I always tell about the beaches in Arizona. I would say that we have miles and miles of sandy beaches. We just don’t have much water and we definitely do not have an ocean in Arizona.
Of course, when my wife and I decided to leave Hawaii, I knew my life was about to change. Little did I know how much it would change!
We arrived in Phoenix at about ten in the morning, in the middle of June. Before we landed, the pilot announced that the temperature was 108 degrees and rising. At that time, the airport was undergoing a major expansion program. So instead of getting off into one of the covered jet-ways, we got off on the tarmac. Around me, I could hear jet engines whining. The blast of hot air made me think I was standing in front of a blast furnace. I was thinking to myself that this must be the hottest place on Earth…that is until I got into my rented car.
As I drove out of the city towards Tucson, I saw the great desert of Arizona. It was flat with mountains in the far horizon. There was sand, cacti, and not much of anything else. There was only one thought that kept repeating in my head. It said, “What am I doing here.”
Fortunately, I had a plan. The only place I could get a job at that time was at Fort Huachuca. It was an old Army fort in Southern Arizona. I thought that I would have to work there a few years and things would improve enough that I could do something different, something more meaningful than working on communications systems. After all, I had been a communications and nuclear weapons engineer for over seventeen years. It was time to stretch my wings and discover my true purpose in life.
Of course, Ft. Huachuca and the town of Sierra Vista were not much to look at. The Fort was an Army fort. The town had one main street, Fry Boulevard. It had every known fast food restaurant and a few car lots. The only thing memorable about Sierra Vista, which means “great view,” was it was not much to look at.
My wife decided that she did not want to live there, but wanted to live in the spiritual Mecca of Arizona… in Sedona. So she had a house in Sedona and I lived in an apartment in Sierra Vista. We were separated by 300 miles. It was a long commute to travel back and forth on weekends. What made it even tougher was the fact that I drove a VW Rabbit that did not have an air conditioner. Even worse, was the fact that this VW did not like the desert! It would boil over it the temperature got over 100 degrees. Also, it had a problem with the exhaust manifold. I would replace it and it would crack in about a month or so. Whenever I drove it, people could hear me coming.
At Christmas, I drove into my garage in Sedona. As I walked into the living room, I had a strange and uncomfortable feeling. There was definitely something wrong, but I could not put my finger on it. When I saw my wife sitting on the chair, I could feel a sinking feeling in my stomach. It was then that she announced that she wanted a separation. A separation, as if 300 miles was not enough. But that was what she wanted.
On our anniversary, I called her to wish her a happy anniversary from Sierra Vista. She announced that she wanted a divorce. You could say that she had a strange sense of timing. Well, after the divorce, I was in a lot of debt from all her charges on her credit cards. I later received notice from the IRS that I owed a lot of money which I did not have. When I saw the agent, he explained that it was not me that owed the money but my wife. I was so relieved. I said that they should go get her. They said that we were still married at the time…that I was responsible and that they would begin garnishing my pay if they had to.
I then called my parents in Hawaii. Now they were not wealthy people. My father had been a carpenter for most of his life, that is, once he left his job working in the fields of the sugar cane plantation. My mom was a seamstress, who also worked very hard. To make ends meet, the both worked 6 days a week. I asked if they could lend me some money to pay off the IRS. This was the worst period of my life—having to ask my parents for some financial help. They sent a check and covered the debt. I clearly remember asking myself what else could go wrong. Unfortunately, I soon found out.
The person who was my boss quit and my new boss was impossible. He was so bad that he made my life absolutely miserable. I remained in the job for a couple of months until I could not stand it anymore. It got so bad that I quit and got another job. That resulted in the added stress of having to learn a new position.
Just after that, my father went into the hospital for an operation. I had no money to go to Hawaii to see him. My grandmother, the last of my grandparents passed away and I could not afford to attend the funeral. And still I ask, what else could go wrong, and life obliged. My VW was hardly roadworthy anymore. So I decided that I needed to do something.
Creating Change
I finally decided that I would go on a personal retreat from life. Besides going to work for 40 hours, I would spend the rest of my time in my apartment. I would talk to no one, see no one, and do nothing outside of the apartment.
Instead, I would spend my time meditating and praying. I would not stop doing this until I had learned what life was about and how to enjoy life in spite of what was happening around me. I was on my personal spiritual quest.
I began to put into practice everything I had learned over the years. From my upbringing and training in Buddhism to my seminary training in Catholicism. Add to that all the years studying metaphysics, the traditional sciences, and spirituality. I needed to bring into harmony, my right-brain knowledge with my left-brain engineering practicality. I needed to develop methods that would work, using myself as the laboratory test animal.
It took eight and a half months. If I had known that it would be that long, I would never have started. But I kept at it. During that time, I had so many insights and experiences. It was a bringing together of the different aspects of science, social sciences, religion, and spirituality. It was a transformational time for me. I emerged a different person, armed with a new knowledge on how to regain control of my life.
Back in Control
I also knew how to show others how to regain control of their lives. With this knowledge, you are no longer a victim to your circumstances. Instead, you are the master, the one who is in charge. You are the controller, the one who knows where they are and be able to chart which direction to take to achieve your dreams and goals. I often tell people that if you are not navigating your life, you can be sure that someone else is. If you are not in control, there are many who will be glad to do it for you. If you are not growing and improving, you are definitely dying or at least falling behind.
Of course, this is not a simple and lifetime solution. Life has a way to testing what you know and how well you are able to implement it. That is the adventure of life. It is at those times when we have to stop what we're doing, reflect on our lives, and chart a new course. There is always more to experience and learn. There are so many different choices to make, pathways to follow, adventures to enjoy. While they provide the excitement of life, they also provide the opportunity to discover who you are and what is possible.
In order to help people regain control of their professional and personal lives, I wrote some of my ideas down in a book. I called it Professional Power, Personal Excellence: 7 Integrated Steps to Accelerate Your Career! As the title says, it is a book that will help you to gain the tools to grow your own career. But more than that, it also provides the methods to enjoy your personal life. after all, what good is achieving professional success without an equal amount of personal fulfillment. I know of too many people who are professionally and financially successful, but their personal lives are a mess. What good is having all the money, fame, and recognition if your personal life is empty and miserable? In the end, looking back on your life, what will you wish for? Very few will say that they wished they had spent their energies making more money and achieving fame. Most will acknowledge that, while money and fame are nice, having a wonderful relationship, a loving family, and a host of great friends would have been better.
Yes, these principles will help change your life, as it has mine. I know that most people say they hate change. Of course, that is not what they mean. What they really mean is they hate change that is either, very difficult, does not help them, or improve their lives. As an example, I sometimes ask an audience, “Is there anyone in the room who hates to have more free time on their hands?” I almost never see a hand go up. If you want to have more discretionary time in your life, you need to create a change, you need to change something.
Effective Strategies to Improve Your Life!
This book contains an exclusive and effective strategy that will allow you to create an improvement in both your personal and professional lives. You will learn how to take full control of your life and achieve your life’s dreams.
To make a change and improve your life, you need to master two qualities. These two qualities are your ability and your behavior. To have one without the other is foolish. You will not get the results you truly desire.
Now, if you are a typical person, you probably have a wide range of knowledge that you have collected over the years. Unfortunately, if you are like most people, your actions fall short of your vast knowledge. It is this lack of intelligent action or performance that keeps us from excelling. Let me explain what I mean.
In my seminars, I point this out to people by using two common examples. I ask the audience, how many of them know how much exercise they should do each day for their personal health. Most of the people raise their hands. When I ask how many of them do it every day, almost all the hands go back down. I then ask how many know what they should and should not eat every day. Again, most of the hands go up. When I ask, how many do it every day, almost all the hands go back down.
This is the disconnect! We know what to do. The problem is simply that we do not seem to be able to act on what we know. We fail to act even though it is in our best interest.
Take a moment and think of all the areas that your knowledge greatly exceeds your behavior. Do you know how you should communicate with coworkers, friends and family, yet fail to do so. Do you know how much of your income should be set aside and invested for your retirement which you never seem to do. Are you aware of deadlines and schedules that you should keep, but fail to do so. Most people, in almost every aspect of their lives, fail to perform up to the level of their knowledge.
The methods found in my book, Professional Power, Personal Excellence will take you through 7 steps. Each step is based on a pair of abilities and behaviors that are specifically designed to help you to regain control of your life. The first five steps are designed to dramatically improve your career growth. The last two steps will help you to transform your experiences so that you not only balance your life; you also maximize your enjoyment of all your experiences.
The book is presently available only in the hardcover version. An e-book is being prepared. If you are interested in the e-book version, please write to me and let me know. I will inform you when the e-book version is ready.
With Professional Power, Personal Excellence, you will learn how easy and simple changes in your life will yield profound results. In fact, if you can master the ability and behavior of the first step, you will be better than a large portion of today’s workforce.

My Background:
Perhaps it would help you to understand the value of what I am saying by getting a little insight of my background. I am a graduate electrical engineer. I was a civil servant and a communications engineer with the U.S. Navy. I designed and installed the latest communication equipment throughout the Pacific Rim countries, including, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica, Vietnam, etc. I was also a nuclear weapons engineer and was responsible for the testing and evaluation of the Polaris, Poseidon, and Trident warheads. With the U.S. Army, I was responsible for the test and evaluation of the latest in communications equipment.
As an engineer, I am a practical person. I know what it takes to be able to perform at peak effectiveness. I know that it is not just knowledge that moves a person forward. The world is filled with people who have tremendous knowledge. Unfortunately, all that knowledge is of no use if it is not applied efficiently and effectively. Without application, it is as useless as a person who never had the necessary job skills or abilities.
The ability to maintain a positive state of mind and being along with the ability to apply our knowledge effectively is the key to outstanding performance. Without performance, people are trapped into repeating their yesterdays, till eternity. Is it any wonder why so many people’s lives are repetitious and boring? Thinking of the people you know, have you noticed how many of them are living their lives virtually. They are observers of life, watching what others are doing. Are you surprised when these observers of life and unable to excel, be promoted, and succeed in the career of their choice?
